Report on the Case of Dr. Saad Eddin Mohamed Ibrahim, Imprisoned Sociologist, Cairo, Egypt (2001)


Summary: This report primarily presents information gathered by two CHR delegates who traveled to Cairo, Egypt in 2001 to observe hearings in the trial of Egyptian sociologist Saad Eddin Ibrahim—whose case had been undertaken by the CHR. The report provides background about the case, the CHR’s initial efforts in Dr. Ibrahim’s behalf, and the political and legal environment in Egypt, as well as the effects of Dr. Ibrahim’s prosecution on the human rights and civil society community there. The report also provides an accounting of the trial hearings attended by the delegates, and interviews that the delegates conducted with Dr. Ibrahim and his wife, as well as with a number of Egyptian government officials.
