Foreign Secretaries of the National Academies
Foreign Secretaries, elected by the membership of the
National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering, and the
Institute of Medicine, serve as official representatives of each
institution to counterpart science academies and other international
organizations, such as the InterAcademy
Panel, InterAcademy
Medical Panel, InterAcademy Council, and International Council of Academies of
Engineering and Technological Sciences. A formal subcommittee of
the National Research Council’s Governing Board, the Committee on
International Programs, consists of the three Foreign Secretaries and
serves as a focal point for international programs at the National
Academies. Each Foreign Secretary serves as an ex officio
member on the International Advisory Board and on committees of two of the six major divisions of the National Research Council, where they provide leadership and coordination on international programs and help draw on the full range of capabilities of program units in developing international activities.
